As the holiday season approaches, it’s important for parents to prioritize the health and safety of their children. Here are a few tips to help keep kids safe and healthy during the holidays:
- Practice good hand hygiene: Encourage kids to wash their hands frequently with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom and before eating. Hand sanitizer can be used when hand washing isn’t possible, but it’s not a substitute for soap and water.
- Maintain physical distance: With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to follow guidelines from health officials and maintain a physical distance of at least 6 feet from others, especially if you’re planning to gather with people outside of your household. In addition, it can help reduce the risk of the flu which spreads in a similar manner to COVID-19. Plus, it’s good etiquette, because it does not invade the personal space of others.
- Wear masks: Wearing masks can help reduce the spread of respiratory droplets and protect others. Encourage kids to wear masks when they’re around people who don’t live in their household, especially in indoor spaces.
- Stay home if sick: If anyone in your household is experiencing symptoms of illness, it’s important to stay home and limit contact with others. This will help prevent the spread of illness to others, including more vulnerable individuals.
- Get vaccinated: If you and your family members are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, it’s important to get vaccinated to protect yourselves and others. Vaccines are safe and effective at reducing the risk of illness and severe complications from COVID-19. Flu vaccines are also very important this time of year. It is a good idea for you and your kids to get your flu vaccine if you have not already.
- Stay active: It’s important for kids to stay physically active, even during the holiday season. Encourage them to participate in activities like walking, running, biking, or playing sports. This can help reduce stress, improve mental health, and maintain a healthy weight.
- Eat healthy: The holiday season can be a time of indulgence, but it’s important to encourage kids to eat a balanced diet and limit sugary treats. Encourage them to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limit their intake of processed and sugary foods.
- Get plenty of sleep: It’s important for kids to get enough sleep to maintain their physical and mental health. Encourage them to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night, and create a consistent bedtime routine to help them wind down before bed.
- Limit screen time: Encourage kids to spend less time in front of screens and more time engaging in other activities, such as reading, playing, or spending time with family and friends. Limiting screen time can help improve sleep, reduce the risk of obesity, and promote social interaction.
By following these tips, parents can help keep their kids safe and healthy during the holiday season. It’s important to stay informed and follow guidelines from health officials to reduce the risk of illness and protect the health of your family and community.
